Fazila Ikwaput struck twice to guide East Bengal FC to a hard-fought 2-1 win against Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City Women’s FC in their opening Group B game of the AFC Women’s Champions League on Sunday, November 1.

The victory over Ho Chi Minh City made East Bengal the first Indian club to record several wins in the AFC Women’s Champions League group stage as well, having defeated Iran’s Bam Khatoon FC 3-1 in the previous edition.

East Bengal will next face Korea Republic’s Hwacheon KSPO WFC on Wednesday, while Ho Chi Minh City take on DPR Korea’s 4.25 SC.

Hwacheon KSPO had earlier suffered a 1-2 loss to the DPR Korea outfit.

Both sides created chances in a closely fought opening spell. Ho Chi Minh City came close to breaking the deadlock when Ngo Thi Hong Nhung’s volley rattled the crossbar, while Resty Naziri squandered a close-range opportunity at the other end.

East Bengal took the lead in the 20th minute after Football Video Support spotted a handball by Rielly Chesna as she tried to halt Fazila Ikwaput’s run.

The Ugandan striker converted the resulting penalty to put the Indian team ahead.

East Bengal almost doubled their lead eight minutes later, but Olivia Anokye’s long-range effort crashed against the crossbar.

The Kolkata team extended their advantage in the 34th minute.

Ikwaput capitalised on Tanaka Hitomi’s powerful header, shrugged off Chesna and slotted the ball past the advancing goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh to complete her brace.

Ho Chi Minh City made a determined attempt to turn the contest around after the break and found a lifeline in the 60th minute.
