India women’s cricket head coach Amol Muzumdar has set his sights on a bigger goal following the team’s historic success in recent years. While winning major tournaments remains important, Muzumdar wants India to take the next step and establish themselves as the dominant force in world cricket.
Having witnessed the growth of Indian cricket from close quarters, Muzumdar believes the team has the talent and mindset to achieve that ambition. The former Mumbai batter, who has repeatedly emphasised the importance of preparation and discipline, wants his players to carry the same hunger into every match, irrespective of the opposition or format.
“Two years down the line, if they start dominating world cricket… dominance is something that we have always spoken about within the squad. Being ruthless on the ground is another thing that we have always maintained,” Muzumdar said during an event organised by the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai (SJAM).
“Obviously, from the background where I come from, my growth in Mumbai cricket was kind of similar. I try to inculcate those things, or give it back. If we start dominating world cricket, I would be happy,” Muzumdar added.
HOW MUZUMDAR TRANSFORMED INDIA WOMEN
Muzumdar took charge of the Indian women’s team on October 25, 2023, succeeding Hrishikesh Kanitkar. His appointment came at an important juncture, with India preparing for two major ICC tournaments over the following two years. Since then, the team has enjoyed considerable success across formats.
The defining moment of his tenure came on November 2, 2025, when India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the World Cup final in Navi Mumbai. Before that, they had scripted history in the semi-final, chasing down 339 against Australia to register the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI cricket at the time.
However, Muzumdar is keen to ensure that the World Cup triumph is not the pinnacle of the team’s journey. His ambition is to build a side that can consistently challenge and defeat the best teams in the world, rather than rely on individual moments of brilliance or occasional tournament success.
India have already shown signs of that approach in their latest assignment. They completed a clean sweep of both the three-match T20I and ODI series against Zimbabwe, winning all six matches.
The challenge will get tougher in December when India travel to South Africa for a multi-format series comprising a one-off Test, three ODIs and three T20Is.
