The United States will issue visas to Brazilian senator Flavio Bolsonaro and his family amid reports that he has left Brazil following his defeat in the presidential election, the US State Department said on Tuesday.
“The State Department will issue visas to Flavio Bolsonaro and his family and allow them entry into the United States,” a senior State Department official said.
However, the official did not confirm whether Bolsonaro was already travelling to the US.
Several American media outlets, including The New York Times and CNNreported that the 45-year-old had left Brazil, citing unnamed US officials. His reported departure came days after incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defeated him in Sunday’s run-off election.
Passports Cancelled Amid Legal Scrutiny
Bolsonaro’s reported departure came as his legal troubles mounted. Brazilian authorities had cancelled his passports, although he had not surrendered the documents as of Tuesday afternoon.
He faces investigations in several cases, including a corruption probe into the financing of a biopic about his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest over allegations of plotting a coup.
The New York Times also reported that the senator was being investigated over alleged links to a Brazilian lawyer accused of laundering more than $1 billion through a suspected fraud scheme.
Bolsonaro Isolated After Election Defeat
Flavio Bolsonaro refused to accept the election result and vowed to challenge it legally. However, his party and political allies have accepted Lula’s victory, leaving the senator increasingly isolated.
Reports that he had travelled to neighbouring Argentina were denied by the country’s security ministry and migration authorities on Tuesday.
His brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, is based in the United States.
