Software company Microsoft has offered about 60 thousand employees to voluntarily quit their jobs. The company gave this information in its blog post. This scheme is for employees of India, USA, UK and Canada.
The scheme will be applicable to employees of many departments of the company. These include departments like AI Experience, Copilot, Finance, Human Resources, Xbox and Windows + Devices. People working in data centres, sales and marketing have been excluded from this.
The company says that employees who choose to leave the job will be given financial assistance. This will also help them in career planning. The company has 23 thousand employees in India, but it is not clear yet how many will get the offer. Eligible employees in India have until December 1 to decide.
Company claims- The aim is to give more options to the employees
Microsoft’s Executive Vice President Amy Coleman has said in her blog post that this is a limited time initiative. Its purpose is to provide more options to those employees who are considering jobs or other career opportunities outside the company.
Coleman said- This proposal of voluntary resignation is new for us. We will learn from this. He said Microsoft will continue to help employees learn new skills and explore other career opportunities within the company. Where it is appropriate to do so, employees will be given these opportunities.
Why did the company give the option to leave voluntarily?
In response to this question, Coleman said in his blog post that this scheme will give employees the option to leave the job with help and move forward. With this, the units of the company included in the scheme will also be able to decide the number of employees according to their changing needs.
What will you get if you leave the job?
The package received under this scheme will be like the company’s normal severance arrangement. This will include one month’s basic salary for every completed year of employment. Apart from this, health insurance and services to help in career change will also be available.
The company made it clear that this scheme will not be implemented equally in all its operations. The decision to participate will be based on the priorities of each business unit and the needs of its employees. According to the blog post, emails will be sent to eligible employees. In this, they will be informed about the conditions of the proposal to leave the job voluntarily.
4,800 employees were laid off in July
The company had laid off 4,800 employees in July this year. The company said that this decision is being taken to spend heavily on AI infrastructure and to increase efficiency in the business.
The company often conducts layoffs at the end of June. Earlier, the company had offered voluntary buyout to about 7% of its American workforce, i.e. about 9,000 employees. According to CNBC report, about 30 percent of the people eligible for this option had chosen the Voluntary Retirement Scheme.
Microsoft had 223,000 employees worldwide at the end of June, compared to 228,000 at the end of 2025, according to regulatory filings.
