Sonam Wangchuk said that protests are a great way for governments to do better work. If there is no space to express anger peacefully, situations like Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh may arise. Wangchuk, who reached the IPF Festival in Mumbai on Saturday, raised questions on holding protests away from the Parliament in India. Also said that in many countries of the world, demonstrations are allowed right in front of the Parliament. Wangchuk said that peaceful demonstration is the right of citizens given by the Constitution. On the arrest of the protesters, he said, “Don’t kill the one who brings the message, understand the message.” This statement has come at a time when the opposition has raised questions on the central government for not allowing peaceful demonstrations. Demonstration is a means of feedback and pressure Wangchuk said that countries around the world like Britain, Norway and Sweden allow demonstrations in front of the Parliament. “In all countries, the front of Parliament is the face of the protest. In India, it was far away from Parliament. New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar is also far away from Parliament,” he said. He said that permission should not be sought to demonstrate. The permission should be used to monitor activities taking place in the city, such as during festivals. Questioning the deployment of paramilitary forces, Wangchuk targeted the Center and said that paramilitary forces come under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). He alleged that these forces were being deployed against people and youth like him. He said that the government should give highest priority to the security of the country. The borders of the country should remain secure. Demanded to place paramilitary forces under the Defense Ministry instead of the Home Ministry. He said he had witnessed “salami slicing” in Ladakh. According to him, in this China is gradually moving inside the Indian territory. Wangchuk claimed that when paramilitary forces are deployed for other duties in winter, attention to the border reduces. By the time the forces return, China has advanced. After this it becomes difficult to push it back. Demanding role of local people in the decisions of Ladakh, Wangchuk said in the program that people living in an area should have the right to decide how that area is run. He said that the people living there also have to bear the effects of neglect. He said- On the basis of this principle, I say that Ladakh should have the right to have its say in deciding how Ladakh should be run. That’s basically what we’re saying. He said that decisions should take into account not only today but also the long-term future of children. According to him, only the people living there can do this in a better way. Wangchuk was taken into preventive custody following the violent protests in Ladakh in September 2025. He was kept under the National Security Act. He was released in March this year.
