Suspended Boxing Federation of India (BFI) secretary general Pramod Kumar has requested World Boxing, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Sports Ministry to send observers to the federation’s Special General Meeting (SGM) on October 28, where a no-confidence motion against president Ajay Singh will be taken up.

Singh has termed the meeting ‘illegal and unconstitutional’, arguing that the BFI constitution does not permit the secretary general to convene an SGM independently. He said the meeting could only be called by the president or requisitioned by two-thirds of the members through him, adding that disciplinary action would be taken against members who attended.

Kumar said World Boxing had responded to his communication, stating that it could not send an observer due to time constraints but would monitor developments and take a decision after the meeting. Singh, however, said the international body had written to the federation emphasising that the BFI constitution must be followed.

The dispute has escalated into a suspension battle between the two officials. Kumar has been under investigation since August over alleged financial irregularities and the cancellation of a national championship.

Earlier this month, Kumar proposed a no-confidence motion against Singh. The BFI president subsequently suspended Kumar with immediate effect, citing alleged financial irregularities, non-cooperation with investigations and misuse of authority.

A day later, Kumar issued a counter-order suspending Singh pending the outcome of the no-confidence motion. Kumar, who was elected last year, claimed he had secured the two-thirds majority required to pass the motion. He said a senior vice-president would preside over the October 28 meeting.

Singh maintained that the meeting would be inconsequential regardless of its outcome because he considered it unconstitutional. Kumar also criticised the president, comparing his approach to that of “Hitler”.

Meanwhile, Dronacharya and Arjuna Award-winning coaches and former boxers, including Mohammed Ali Qamar and Manoj Kumar, called for accountability, unity and a comprehensive national plan for boxing amid the ongoing power struggle.

They said their aim was to strengthen the sport’s institutions and secure a better future for young boxers aspiring to represent India internationally.
