Billionaire Elon Musk has poured more than $442 million into Republican campaigns and political groups ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections, making him the biggest individual political donor in US history.

New filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) show that Musk has stepped up his spending in recent weeks. According to Forbes, he gave $74.8 million in three direct contributions to his America PAC between October 6 and 14.

His company, United States of America Inc., contributed another $1.98 million. This pushed Musk’s total contributions during the first half of October to nearly $77 million.

America PAC was set up by Musk and has become a major vehicle for supporting Republican and conservative candidates. The group has focused on voter turnout efforts, digital campaigns and spending in closely contested races.

The PAC reported spending about $42.7 million in the first two weeks of October. It had around $46.5 million in cash left as of October 14.

FEC records compiled by the PaidForPolitics tracker show that America PAC has reported roughly $68.6 million in independent expenditures during the current midterm election cycle. Much of that money has gone into competitive Senate contests.

Texas Senate Race Gets Biggest Share

The Texas Senate race has received the largest share of America PAC’s spending so far.

The group has spent $27.9 million opposing Democratic candidate James Talarico. It has also spent another $4.8 million supporting Republican candidate Ken Paxton, Forbes reported.

Other key Senate races have also attracted significant spending from the PAC. Around $9.3 million has been spent in Ohio, while Michigan has received about $7.7 million. The PAC has also spent $2.7 million in Iowa and $2.1 million in Maine.

The spending in these states has largely been aimed at defeating Democratic candidates.

Musk’s political spending has grown sharply during the election cycle. The New York Times reported earlier this month that he had already contributed more than $366 million to midterm races by the end of September.

That figure included donations to America PAC as well as other outside political groups.

Among those contributions was a $158 million donation to the Republican Senate Leadership Fund last month. The super PAC later transferred the same amount to a Texas political action committee supporting Paxton’s campaign.

Musk’s growing role in US politics comes as he continues to hold the position of the world’s richest person. Forbes estimated his net worth at $909.8 billion as of late Thursday night.
