MUMBAI: Students in Maharashtra will get a 13-day break for Diwali, with schools scheduled to close from November 2 to November 14, according to the Education Department’s academic calendar for 2026-27. Teaching will resume on Monday, November 16, when the second semester begins.

The schedule covers recognised primary, secondary and higher secondary schools across the state. The dates were communicated through a circular issued by the Secondary Education Department, giving schools and families advance notice of the holiday period.

The vacation covers key festive occasions, including Dhanteras on November 6, Diwali Padwa (Balipratipada) on November 10 and Bhaubij on November 11. The announcement allows parents to organise travel and family celebrations while helping schools plan their academic schedules.

What The Diwali Break Means For Students And Parents

With the vacation dates announced in advance, families can make arrangements for travel and festive gatherings without waiting for last-minute school notices. The break will cover nearly two weeks, with the reopening date falling on the Monday immediately after the scheduled vacation ends.

Parents should nevertheless keep track of communications from their children’s schools, particularly if any additional instructions or subsequent departmental notices are issued.

Schools Must Follow The Prescribed Holiday Rules

The circular also reminds schools that holidays must be scheduled in line with the Secondary School Code. Under the rules, the annual holiday total cannot exceed 76 days, and schools must complete a minimum of 230 working days during the academic year.

Individual schools are not permitted to change the prescribed vacation dates on their own. Institutions that want to make adjustments for regional or local observances, such as Ganeshotsav or Christmas, must seek approval from the education authorities before changing their schedules.

Any revisions to the fixed vacation dates must follow the department’s directions. This means parents should not assume that a school will be closed on additional dates unless the change has been authorised and communicated officially.

When Does The Next Summer Vacation Begin?

After the Diwali break, the second semester is scheduled to continue until May 1, 2027. The summer vacation will start on Monday, May 3, and run through Monday, June 14. The next academic year is expected to begin after the summer holidays.

The calendar gives students, parents and teachers a broad outline of the academic year, from the end of the first semester to the following summer break. Families should refer to official school communications and any updated Education Department circulars for confirmation of dates and possible authorised changes.
