Delhi’s most famous Ramlila
The annual Ramlila, held in northwest Delhi’s historic Shalimar Bagh – a Mughal-era royal garden dating back to 1653 – is a major cultural attraction of the city’s Vijayadashami festival. Organized by local Ramlila committees, the event features traditional theater style, spectacular set design and energetic staging of scenes from Ramayana and lasts for ten days. Known for attracting large crowds, Shalimar Bagh Ramlila often features popular actors from TV and films in lead roles.
Ramayana is an ancient epic, which describes the life of Lord Rama and his moral journey. ‘Ramlila’ — meaning ‘Ram’s play’ — is a traditional theater form, staged during Navratri. Ramlila, popularized through Tulsidas ji’s ‘Ramcharitmanas’, transforms religious texts into a vibrant cultural presentation, symbolizing the victory of good (dharma) over evil.
