ISRO has completed testing of the system that separates the Crew Module (CM) and Service Module (SM) of the Gaganyaan programme. After this, the design capability of this system has been confirmed.
These tests were conducted at Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) located in Thiruvananthapuram. Gaganyaan’s first unmanned mission G1 is targeted to be launched in 2026.
Understand module separation like this…
Gaganyaan’s orbital module consists of crew module and service module. Both modules are connected through a separate system. Electricity and liquid are supplied between them through umbilical connections.
Both modules are linked together before launch. They work as a unit until the in-orbit phase of the mission ends.
The crew module separates from the service module before re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. For this many events happen in a fixed sequence.
what was tested
ISRO conducted these tests at the Vikram Sarabhai Center to validate the overall design of the separation system. In the test setup, an interconnected structure of crew module and service module was prepared. A large number of instruments were installed in it to investigate the entire process.
According to ISRO, these tests confirmed the design capability of the separation system. Additionally, the strength and shock resistance of many important systems of the crew module were also tested.
These include the avionics system, inertial navigation system and thermal protection system fitted in the rear, cone-shaped heat shield.
The Crew Module Deployable Umbilical Shield was also examined. In addition, pyrotechnic devices associated with the Crew Module Righting System and Thermal and Humidity Control System were also involved in the test.
The success of these tests has increased the confidence in the proper functioning of the separation system implemented for the first unmanned Gaganyaan mission G1, proposed in the year 2026.
