How can it happen that Rajinikanth comes on screen and the enemies are not in a tight spot? Be it the way he wears glasses, his walking style or the swag in which he teaches the villain a lesson without saying much, all this is no less than a treat for the fans of Thalaivaa. Rajinikanth’s charm continues in the film Jailer 2 also. There is action, comedy, presence of big stars and a lot of masala too, but there is a looseness in the picture. The gathering of stars is beautiful, but the story sometimes loses its way. That is, the roar of the tiger is heard, but every time there is no strength in the story. Story: Return of Tiger Rajinikanth is once again seen in the style of Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. This time too the issue revolves around crime, enmity, dangerous people and family safety. There are such twists in the story, which once again bring Tiger into action mode. S.J. The presence of Surya’s character Bodhi Kalpak, Vidya Balan’s Kantha Kalpak and Mithun Chakraborty add new colors to the story. There are many such moments in the film, where it seems that a big explosion is about to happen. At some places this expectation is fulfilled, but many times the story starts serving the same spices again and again. There is no dearth of action and star power in the film, but if the story had been woven more tightly, the fun could have been doubled. Some incidents seem more convenient than necessary and the flow of the story also breaks in between. Acting: Thalaiva’s own swag Rajinikanth’s biggest strength is his screen presence. When he comes into the frame, eyes automatically focus on him. His style, dialogue delivery and action style still give fans a chance to whistle. Even at this stage of his age, his stardom remains the biggest attraction of the film. S.J. Surya attracts attention with his style. There is a different kind of energy in his character and he makes his presence felt in front of Rajinikanth. Artists like Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty increase the star value of the film, although not every character gets equally powerful space. On the comedy front, Yogi Babu and the rest of the cast provide some light moments. The film is full of stars, but it is not necessary that every entry becomes memorable. At some places the star power seems to outweigh the story. Direction: Full of masala, weak grip. Director Nelson Dilipkumar knows how to capitalize on Rajinikanth’s stardom on screen. The effort to strike a balance between the hero’s entry, action sequence and comedy is clearly visible. There are some moments in the film which can excite the audience in the theatre. The problem arises when the film starts repeating its own masala again and again. After the success of the first film, expectations from the sequel increase, but big action and star cameos alone do not compensate for the lack of a strong story. The second part of the film could have been tighter. At many places the pace of the screenplay slows down and some twists do not leave as much impact as is expected from them. Cinematography and Technical Aspects Vijay Karthik Kannan’s cinematography helps in making the action and big setups impressive. The visual treatment of the film is gorgeous and the action sequences show the necessary scale. The background score also enhances the impact of many scenes. But in a film of about three and a quarter hours, the importance of editing increases further. Had some parts been shortened, the story would have been more concise. Where the film should move forward rapidly, it sometimes stagnates. This is the reason why despite some action sequences being strong, the pace of the entire film does not remain the same. Music: Anirudh Ravichander’s background score gives weight to the film’s action and Rajinikanth’s entry. The music in many scenes makes the atmosphere more exciting and adds to the swag of Thalaivaa. However, the balance between music and action is not the same everywhere. In some parts, the need to maintain the pace of the film is felt more. The background score does its job, but does not completely cover the weaknesses of the story. Where is the lack left? The biggest strength of Jailer 2 is Rajinikanth and the biggest weakness is the loose flow of the story. The film has a dash of action, comedy and big stars, but some incidents seem excessively extended. In the second part, the grip of the screenplay weakens and the climax also does not leave as strong an impact as expected. The sequel is expected to repeat the magic of the first film. Some moments here go in that direction, but the entire film does not maintain that level of continuity. Final Verdict on the film: Jailer 2 is a chance for Rajinikanth’s fans to once again see the swag of Thalaivaa. His entry, action and some funny moments make the film entertaining. S.J. Suriya’s presence also maintains interest in the film. But the weak screenplay, stretched story and less effective climax hinder the fun. Overall, the film has charm, a fair of stars and a dash of action, but the story does not support you every time. The masala is there for the die-hard fans of Rajinikanth, but if you go with the expectation of power like the first Jailer, it may definitely feel a little lacking.
