Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde have been placed under preventive arrest for entering the now-denotified Jantar Mantar protest site without permission on Tuesday, said the Delhi Police.
The Delhi Police will produce them before the Special Executive Magistrate Court at Mandir Marg on Thursday. The cops had also filed an FIR against Das, Ranka and Shinde for allegedly trespassing into Jantar Mantar without authorisation.
Under preventive arrest, police can detain someone without a warrant to stop a cognisable offence from happening. Under this provision, police cannot keep anyone in custody for more than 24 hours without the order of a magistrate.
Das, Shinde and Ranka were detained by Delhi Police after staging a protest at the Jantar Mantar areaa day after the site was de-notified as a designated protest venue. The leaders, along with other CJP volunteers, were seen jumping over a gate with flags in their hands to enter the area and stage a demonstration.
The protesters had a brief confrontation with police personnel who tried to stop them as they raised “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Inquilab Zindabaad” slogans. Dipke confirmed that Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde, along with others, were subsequently detained and taken away.
While the leaders are in custody, the remaining 11 CJP volunteers were later released from the Jaffarpur Kalan Police Station.

This came after the Delhi Police registered a case against Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka for entering the venue without permission. The CJP and the opposition INDIA bloc have been holding parallel protests in the capital, demanding the rollback of SIR and the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
On Saturday (October 10), the CJP had called for a protest at Jantar Mantar to push for its demands. However, a massive crackdown by the Delhi Police on the proposed agitation resulted in thousands of detentions and internet shutdown in parts of the capital.
