Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Tuesday that he spoke with his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, and that the two leaders discussed ways to strengthen the strategic partnership.

Writing on X, PM Modi said: “Had a warm and productive conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney. We agreed to build on the positive momentum in India-Canada ties and work towards concrete outcomes across key areas of our Strategic Partnershipincluding trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties.”

“Together, India and Canada are contributing towards a more stable and prosperous world”, he wrote.

Carney visited India in March this year, marking his first official visit to the country. During his trip, he met with Prime Minister Modi and the two leaders decided to finalise a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in the near future to bolster trade ties.

India-Canada Ties

Ties between India and Canada hit a rough patch in after the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar near Vancouver.

Nijjar, a prominent Sikh activist who supported the Khalistan movement, was a Canadian citizen. Then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had alleged that Indian agents may have been involved in his killing, an allegation New Delhi firmly rejected.

The allegations led to a diplomatic row between the two nations and a major deterioration in bilateral ties in 2024.

Mark Carney, the successor of Trudeau, has since sought to repair the bilateral ties, especially in the face of a global tariff war imposed by US President Donald Trump.

During his trip to India in March, the Canadian leader described India as “the fastest-growing major economy and a powerhouse of global commerce and technology”.

The two sides have set a longer-term target of increasing bilateral trade to USD 70 billion by 2030.
