An old video of Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a stunning free-kick in a Saudi Pro League match has gone viral on social media, even as controversy looms around the superstar regarding his walkout from the Portugal team.

Ronaldo also scored the opening goal against Diriyah on Friday.

The 3-0 victory took Al-Nassr level on points with league leaders Al-Qadsiah, but they remained second after eight rounds because of an inferior goal difference.

Ronaldo broke the deadlock midway through the first half, reacting quickest to a rebound after goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah saved Kingsley Coman’s shot. Ronaldo converted from close range to take his career tally to 980 goals.

During the international break, the 41-year-old Ronaldo was absent from Portugal’s team. He has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for his nation.

In a lengthy statement posted on Tuesday, Ronaldo said that newly appointed coach Jorge Jesus had gone back on his word regarding when the striker would feature in the Nations League.

Ronaldo won the Saudi Arabian title with Al-Nassr under Jesus in May and opened the scoring midway through the first half on Friday.

On Friday, Abdullah blocked Coman’s effort from outside the box, but Ronaldo pounced on the rebound and fired home from close range to score the 980th goal of his career.

Meanwhile, in a statement of almost 2,000 words, Ronaldo apologised for walking out on the national team and said that he was willing to serve a suspension if required.

“I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team,” Ronaldo said.

Jesus left Ronaldo on the bench for Portugal’s Nations League clash against Norway. Ahead of the next game against Denmark, the coach said that the forward wouldn’t start, prompting the 41-year-old to leave the national team camp.
