This action was taken based on the findings of the investigation by the Internal Committee (IC) of the university. IC had recommended heavy punishment against Bimol Akoizam. After the Manipur violence in 2023, he entered active politics. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from ‘Inner Manipur’ seat on Congress Party ticket and was elected MP by defeating the BJP candidate by more than 1 lakh votes. The students had alleged that they had given a complaint against the professor to JNU Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit in May 2026. The girl students alleged that no proper action was taken on their complaint at that time. Gupta had asked the university administration to submit the report in three days.
