It can be expensive for foreign students studying in America to get a job after studies. The Trump government has proposed to impose a fee of 70 thousand dollars i.e. about ₹ 68 lakh for every new student. This fee has been kept for Optional Practical Training (OPT). Under this, foreign students are allowed to work in America after completing their studies. The fees will not have to be paid by the student, but by his college or university. This decision will have the biggest impact on the students of India and China. According to the data of 2024-25, about 3.63 lakh students from India and about 2.66 lakh students from China were studying in America. That means about 6.3 lakh students from both the countries are in America. Many of these students, after completing their studies, get jobs in America through OPT. Especially a large number of Indian students study engineering, technology and other STEM subjects. Under OPT i.e. Optional Practical Training, foreign students can get work experience related to their studies. Usually, after completing their studies, they are allowed to work for one year. Students of STEM i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths may be allowed to work for two more years. According to the proposal, if a student applies for OPT for the first time, his college or university will have to pay 70 thousand dollars i.e. about ₹ 68 lakh. If the student extends the OPT, then every time it is renewed, a fee of 30 thousand dollars i.e. about ₹ 29 lakh will have to be paid. This money will not be taken directly from the student. But due to such huge fees, the expenses of colleges and universities in providing OPT facility to foreign students will increase significantly. Tech companies may also face problems. Through OPT, foreign students get work experience in America. Tech companies and other companies provide jobs to such students especially in STEM related work. NAFSA, an organization associated with American higher education institutions, has opposed the proposal. The organization says that turning foreign students away from America could harm the country’s innovation and economic development. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says that this step is being taken to prevent fraud and misuse in the OPT program. The department alleged that the program was being used to bring cheap foreign workers to the US. Right now this is just a proposal. People and institutions will get 60 days to give their opinion on this. After this the government can finalize it. The Trump government has already taken strict action against foreign students. The Trump government has already taken many strict steps regarding foreign students. Last year, the legal status of thousands of foreign students was revoked. Many of these students were detained and deported from the United States. This year, the government had also made a new rule regarding the period of stay of foreign students in America. Colleges and universities had protested against this. In September, a federal court blocked the rule from taking effect. Number of Indian students in America has decreased. According to a report, there has been a 15% decrease in the number of applicants coming from India. Most of the students from India go to study in America. 3 reasons for the shortage – 1. Strict visa rules and policies: A major reason for this is the strict visa rules and immigration policies. Due to these rules, the fear among students has increased as to how easy it will be to stay in America for further studies and job. 2. New visa deadline: The US government has changed the pre-determined period of stay for student and visitor visas. Now in many cases the time limit for staying in America may be limited to four years. This may increase problems for students studying for a long time. 3. Fear of heavy fees: America is also considering imposing fees of up to $1 lakh on foreign students, especially for those students who want to work in America through OPT after completing their studies. ———————— Also read this news… Levitt will leave White House job and join Fox News: This is Trump’s favorite channel; US President Donald Trump’s former press secretary Carolina Levitt, who had left the post of press secretary because of her children, is now going to join Fox News.
