The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Tuesday confirmed that India, Germany, Qatar and Turkiye are among seven countries that have expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games and have been invited to present their proposals to the Future Host Commission in November. It also said that no new interested parties will be considered for the 2036 Games after October 31.

India formally submitted its Expression of Interest to host the 2036 Olympics in 2024. However, the host selection process was later put on hold following the election of Kirsty Coventry as IOC president.

“The Interested Parties currently in Continuous Dialogue with the IOC, with a stated interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, are (in alphabetical order): Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, Republic of Korea, South Africa and Turkiye,” the IOC said in a statement.

The IOC said the bids will be assessed on several technical parameters, including venue master plans, athlete experience, funding strategy, political and public support, Games delivery capabilities and plans to create a lasting legacy for host communities.

“They will also be evaluated on strategic elements such as their vision for the Games and their alignment with both local development plans and the goals of the Olympic Movement,” the statement added.

The IOC said it’ll host virtual presentations by the Interested Parties to the Future Host Commission in November and begin feasibility assessments in March 2027, before opening the ‘Strategic Dialogue’.

The governing body added that several other National Olympic Committees (NOCs) are holding noncommittal discussions with the IOC about potentially hosting Olympic Games beyond 2036.

“I was fortunate to compete at five Olympic Games, across four continents. Each had their own character,” IOC President Kirsty Coventry said. “Each host brought something unique through its people, its culture and the way it chose to stage the Games. But wherever the Games take place, one thing must never change: athletes have to be at the heart of everything we do. As an athlete, you spend years working to make your Olympic dream come true. The experience you have when you finally reach the Olympic Games stays with you for the rest of your life. That is why, for every future host, delivering the best possible experience for the athletes must always be the starting point.”
