India on Tuesday condemned the attack on a Panama-flagged merchant ship in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman. 12 crew members were injured in the attack, including 11 Indians. There were a total of 19 people on board the ship. Of these, 17 were Indian citizens. With the help of Omani authorities, the injured have been evacuated and admitted to Khasab in Oman for treatment. Since February, more than 100 Indian sailors have been affected in the attacks in Hormuz. At the same time, 11 Indian sailors lost their lives in these attacks. More than 4,500 Indian sailors in the Gulf region Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said on September 29 that more than 4,500 Indian sailors are working on different commercial ships in the Persian Gulf and surrounding areas. He had told that there are 6 Indian-flagged commercial ships present in the west of the Strait of Hormuz. Apart from this, 6 foreign flag ships are also carrying goods for India. There are about 163 Indian sailors on board these 12 ships. According to Jaiswal, India’s Shipping Ministry is keeping an eye on the movement of these ships. The safety and condition of the sailors is being monitored in coordination with Indian embassies and local agencies. Indian missions are taking necessary steps to help them if needed. India had also raised the issue in the United Nations, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar had raised the issue of safety of commercial ships and sailors in the United Nations on 26 September. He had said that there are continuous attacks on ships and sailors in the Strait of Hormuz, Red Sea and Black Sea. He termed these attacks as completely unacceptable and said that such violence and loss of lives must stop. The next day, in India’s statement in the United Nations General Assembly, Jaishankar said that the increasing new threats in the sea are making the already existing land crisis more serious. He said that sailors from Indian and other countries have lost their lives in the attacks on the Gulf and other sea routes.
