West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has revived the controversy surrounding Mamata Banerjee’s leg injury during the 2021 Assembly election campaign in Nandigram. Adhikari has alleged that Banerjee staged the injury and has cited medical records from the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences in support of his claim. He has also announced a fresh investigation into the matter.
Speaking in Nandigram, Adhikari alleged that Banerjee had falsely presented the injury during the 2021 election campaign. He said medical documents from the time showed “no evidence of fracture” and announced that the state government would look into the matter.
Adhikari has said further details of the proposed investigation will be shared after the ongoing bypoll process.
What Did The Election Commission Find?
The injury became a major political controversy during the election campaign, with questions raised over whether Banerjee had been attacked.
The Election Commission sought a report from its special observers, Vivek Dubey and Ajay Nayak. Their report concluded that the incident was accidental and found no evidence of a planned attack on Banerjee’s convoy. The Election Commission subsequently said there was no evidence to establish that she had been attacked.
The poll panel did, however, take action over security lapses and ordered action against officials responsible for Banerjee’s security arrangements.
What Do The Latest Claims Establish?
The medical documents shared by Adhikari show that the March 11, 2021 CT scans did not record a fracture in the areas examined. However, these reports alone do not establish that Banerjee’s overall injuries were fabricated.
Contemporary reports from SSKM Hospital had described injuries involving her left ankle and foot, as well as injuries to her shoulder, forearm and neck. The latest investigation announced by Adhikari is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the 2021 incident further.
The renewed controversy comes ahead of the Nandigram bypoll, bringing the 2021 election episode back into the political spotlight.
