Saudi Arabia is preparing to start a war against Houthi rebels in Yemen. According to Reuters report, Saudi may land more than 1 lakh Yemeni soldiers. Its objective is to free the Bab-al-Mandeb Strait located at the southern end of the Red Sea from the control of Houthis and to secure the route of maritime trade. The increasing hold of the Houthis in this area has increased the threat to the world’s important sea routes. This route is important for trade between Asia and Europe. The Bab-el-Mandeb is one of the world’s major maritime trade routes. 12% of the world’s oil passes through this route. Why the war to capture Bab-el-Mandeb? Last month, the Houthis advanced into Yemen’s coastal areas and tightened their grip around this route. They pushed back Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces and the UAE-backed National Resistance Forces. The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. Through this route, ships reach Europe from Asia via the Red Sea and Suez Canal. For this reason it is important for global trade and oil supply. Saudi Arabia fears that if the Houthis remain in control, the threat to trade and oil transportation through this route may increase. Considering two types of military operations against the Houthis: According to the report, Saudi Arabia has two options for military action. The first option would try to secure the sea route by conducting a limited attack around the Bab-el-Mandeb. In the second option, operations can be conducted simultaneously in many areas of Yemen. This may include areas like Al-Bayda, Marib, Taiz and Al-Jouf. This operation will be led by Yemeni forces, who will be supported by Saudi Arabia. If necessary, Saudi Arabia can also launch air strikes. Depending on the scope of the operation, more than 1 lakh Yemeni soldiers can be mobilized. However, the situation is not yet clear regarding the timeline of military action. America is not ready to enter the war directly. According to the report, America is providing intelligence information, help in determining targets and military advice to Saudi Arabia. However, US President Donald Trump has not agreed to the Saudi leadership’s demand for direct military help and air strikes. At present, America is not expected to get directly involved in the war. Saudi Arabia has also received military help from Pakistan and Turkey. Pakistan had sent air defense systems, light artillery, drones and anti-drone equipment to Aden last month. Pakistani military advisers are working with Saudi officials. However, Pakistan has not decided to send its troops to fight in Yemen. Turkish drones have also been deployed in Yemen. At the same time, France has announced to send defensive systems and troops to Yanbu. What is the challenge facing Saudi Arabia? The lack of unity among the opposing groups of Houthis in Yemen is a big challenge for Saudi Arabia. The interests and political goals of these groups are different. In such a situation, merely increasing the number of soldiers will not determine the success of the operation. Saudi Arabia is also concerned about the security of its oil bases. Houthis have already targeted Saudi Arabia with drones and missiles. If the fighting in Yemen intensifies, the risk of attacks on Saudi oil bases and maritime trade may also increase. ———————– Read this news also….
