The BJP government of Bengal reached the Supreme Court on Wednesday against the interim bail granted to Congress candidate Milan Pradhan in the by-election of Nandigram assembly seat of West Bengal.
On behalf of the government, the Solicitor General told the court that Milan Pradhan has been arrested in the murder case. The High Court granted him interim bail in the name of contesting elections. Therefore this matter should be heard soon.
Commenting on this, Chief Justice Surya Kant said- Many cases are already listed for hearing tomorrow. We can assure you that your petition will be rejected, but we will do this not tomorrow, on Monday i.e. 5th October.
High Court has granted interim bail till October 20 with conditions.
Pradhan has been granted interim bail in six criminal cases registered in 2007. These include charges of murder, attempt to murder and violation of the Arms Act. On September 29, the Calcutta High Court had granted him interim bail till October 20. With this, he will be able to campaign for the Nandigram by-election to be held on October 6.
The High Court has directed Milan Pradhan to surrender before the trial court on October 21. In all the six criminal cases, he will have to deposit a surety bond of Rs 20,000 each.
The court has also directed Pradhan to give his mobile number to the investigating officer. The investigating officer will be able to call the candidate twice a day.
Subhendu Adhikari had won Bhawanipur and Nandigram seats. He has defeated Mamata Banerjee on Bhawanipur seat.
By-election after the officer leaves the seat
The Nandigram seat was won by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in the 2026 assembly elections. He also won from Bhawanipur seat of Kolkata. After this Suvendu Adhikari left Nandigram seat. The Election Commission announced by-election on this seat.
Nandigram has a special place in the politics of Bengal.
Nandigram has a special place in the politics of West Bengal. In 2007, Suvendu Adhikari had helped in the anti-land acquisition movement led by Mamata Banerjee.
Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress came to power in 2011 by ousting the 34-year-old Left Front government. Nandigram movement is counted among the major developments related to this political change.
Shubhendu Adhikari had defeated Mamata Banerjee by 1,956 votes from Nandigram seat in the 2021 assembly elections.
