In another case emerging amid Maharashtra’s statewide crackdown on eateries and dairies, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), led by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, has suspended the licence of a Mumbai hotel after a customer allegedly found a rat in his dosa.
The incident was reported from Radhakrishna Hotel in Borivali West, where the man, named Amit Trivedi, had gone with his two brothers and son to eat South Indian food, according to an India Today report.
Customer claims rat found in dosa
Trivedi had ordered a Mysore masala dosa and said he noticed a small rat in the food after eating a few bites. The sight allegedly left him shocked and he began vomiting.
He subsequently approached the Borivali police and reported the incident. Senior Police Inspector Pushpalata Mandale said the police forwarded the complaint to the FDA, following which officials took action against the hotel.
An FDA official confirmed that the licence of Radhakrishna Hotel has been suspended for now. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
The case comes as the Maharashtra FDA steps up inspections of food establishments across the state, particularly during the festive season.
Tukaram Mundhe leads food safety crackdown
Since taking charge as Maharashtra FDA Commissioner in May, Mundhe has drawn attention for leading an intensive campaign against alleged food safety violations and adulteration.
The department has carried out surprise inspections at restaurants, cafes, ice cream outlets and dairy businesses, with several establishments facing action over alleged hygiene violations, pest infestations and the use of expired or substandard ingredients.
The FDA has also seized suspected adulterated food products, synthetic milk and substandard paneer and edible oils during its inspections.
The campaign has received public attention, but some enforcement actions have also faced legal scrutiny. The Bombay High Court recently questioned the FDA over what it described as “undue haste” and high-handedness in certain cases.
