US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up a lavish state visit in Washington on Friday with warm words and plans for more talks, but without major breakthroughs on some of the most difficult issues between the two powers.
The summit delivered a two-month extension of a tariff truce between the world’s two largest economies, while questions over Taiwan, artificial intelligence and wider trade tensions remained largely unresolved.
Trump Hails ‘Friendship, Strength, Success’
Trump struck an upbeat tone after his talks with Xi, calling the meeting as “one of Friendship, Strength, and Success, for both China and the U.S.A.”
“We’ve made great strides, very positive for both countries,” Trump told reporters as he had tea with Xi at the White House.
Xi said his Washington visit had added “new substance” to his earlier meeting with Trump in Beijing and said the two countries had agreed to maintain “strategic stability on the basis of respect, fairness, and reciprocity”.
Tariff Truce Extended
The extension of the tariff truce was among the few concrete outcomes from the summit. The temporary arrangement gives Washington and Beijing more time to manage their trade dispute, but no major new agreement was announced.
There were also no significant policy announcements on Taiwan or artificial intelligence, two areas that remain central to US-China tensions.
The leaders did, however, agree to continue their dialogue. They are expected to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, in November and at the G20 meeting in Miami in December.
Pomp, Pageantry And Pandas
Trump rolled out an elaborate welcome for Xi, including a state dinner attended by leading US technology figures, military pageantry and tours of the White House helipad and ballroom construction site.
On Friday, Trump took Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, to the National Archives, where they viewed the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.
“We’re just comparing how this goes 250 years, theirs goes 6,000 years,” Trump said, referring to the history of the US and China.
The summit also produced an unexpected announcement: two Chinese pandas are expected to arrive at a US zoo.
Iran Also On Agenda
Trump confirmed that the stalled Iran war was discussed during his talks with Xi.
Asked at the National Archives whether they had spoken about Iran, Trump replied: “We did, we did.”
He was also asked about the possibility of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.
“I think we’re going to do great,” Trump said.
