How does a submarine cable work?
Fiber Optic Technology: Submarine cables are not like electrical wires. These contain extremely thin glass fibers, through which data travels thousands of kilometers in the form of light pulses.
Repeater: To ensure that the signal does not weaken over long distances, repeaters are installed at various places in the cable. They get electricity through the metal layer present inside the cable.
Security: The cable is covered with several protective layers to protect it from sea pressure and damage. Near the coast they are made stronger and at many places are buried in the seabed.
What happens if a submarine cable is cut?
The Internet does not shut down completely. When the cable is cut, the data is sent through other cables. This is called network redundancy.
Companies divide data traffic into multiple cables, so that if one cable fails, the other can take over.
Where cables are short, the Internet may be slow or some services may be affected.
Satellite connectivity can also act as a backup for essential services.
But if there is only one cable in an area and it gets cut, the internet there can be completely shut down.
