A 19-year-old Jhansi woman died after allegedly consuming rat poison after gang-rape, with her family accusing the six suspects of threatening to circulate a video of the assault.

A 19-year-old woman died in Jhansi after allegedly consuming rat poison following a reported gang rape by six youths, including three minors. Her family has alleged that the accused filmed the assault and threatened to circulate the video if she spoke about it.
The incident was reported from Indi village in the Gursarai area. According to the complaint filed by the woman’s father, she had allegedly been harassed by the accused since Sunday. The family claimed they had raised the matter with the youths’ families, but the alleged harassment continued.
On Monday afternoon, the woman reportedly went to a cattle shed for some work when the six youths allegedly intercepted her and sexually assaulted her. Her family further alleged that the accused recorded the incident and threatened to make the video public, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.
Woman Dies After Health Deteriorates
A family member said the woman allegedly consumed rat poison after becoming distressed over the threats. She was taken to a private hospital in Gursarai around noon and was discharged after her condition appeared to improve.
Her health later deteriorated during the night. She was taken to a community health centre, where doctors declared her dead after she was brought in at around 4 am on Tuesday.
Five Accused Held
Jhansi SSP Vikas Kumar said five of the six accused had been arrested, while the sixth remained absconding. The accused have been identified as Sushil, Ajay, Gullu, Chhotu, Krishna and another person. Police said their exact ages are still being verified, according to outlet.
A case has been registered under Section 70 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which relates to gang rape.
Police said a preliminary inquiry found that Sushil had known the woman for some time and had been in contact with her. Investigators are examining the allegations of sexual assault, the alleged threats and the circumstances surrounding her death.
NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognisance
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports that a 19-year-old woman in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide after allegedly being gang-raped by six people, including three minors. The commission has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Jhansi, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
According to the NHRC, the reported incident raises serious human rights concerns if the allegations are found to be true. The commission has asked authorities to provide details of the investigation and inform it about any compensation paid to the deceased woman’s family. The NHRC said the woman was reportedly distressed by threats that a video of the alleged assault would be circulated.
