The film ‘Love Lottery’ starts its game with this question. How is the story of the film? Bharni Verma (Helly Daruwala) comes into the life of Kartik Saxena (Akshay Oberoi). The meeting turns into love and both get married. But after marriage, the same relationship gradually starts getting complicated. Trust decreases, tension increases and distance comes between the two. Then one day Bharni is murdered. The police’s attention goes straight to Karthik and Inspector Vikram Bisht (Kabir Duhan Singh) arrests him. Karthik declares himself innocent, but the odds against him do not diminish. After this he tells the entire story of his marriage to his lawyer Prashant Batra (Vikram Sharma). From the first meeting to love, marriage and cracks in relationships. The interest of the film lies here, the more Karthik tells his story, the more the suspicion increases. How is the acting in the film? Akshay Oberoi is the real strength of the film. There is fear, anger and also the desperation to save himself in Karthik’s character. Akshay plays these emotions without making much noise. In many scenes he looks so normal that due to this the suspicion on him increases. His monologue in the climax also leaves an impact. Helly maintains the necessary mystery in the character of Daruwala Bharni. She is not easily read throughout the film, which is important for this character. Kabir Duhan Singh is fit in the role of a police officer. Vijayant Kohli brings lightness to the story, although some of his character’s points on marriage and women seem overly straightforward. Agni Agyari and Vikram Sharma also leave an impact in their roles. How is the direction of the film? Arvind Pandey has presented the serious issue through murder mystery and courtroom drama instead of turning it into a direct speech. The first half of the film is more fun because of this. The relationship is breaking down and at the same time the mystery of the murder is also getting complicated. Every once in a while something new comes to light and the needle of suspicion keeps spinning. But the story slows down a bit in the second half. Some twists in the courtroom part do not leave much impact and some things are explained through direct dialogues instead of the experiences of the characters. This is where the film could have been made better. The film talks about marital disputes and emotional pressure from a man’s perspective. The theme is not new, but it is interesting to combine it with a murder mystery. The problem is that at some places the debate becomes too straightforward instead of being nuanced. Naveen V. Mishra’s cinematography suits the serious atmosphere of the film. The locations of Uttarakhand are beautiful. Prakash Jha’s editing gives pace to the first half, but if a little more scissor had been used in the second half of the 2 hour 21 minute film, the fun would have increased. The same cinematography and editing are recorded in the technical credits of the film. How is the music of the film? The music of Arvind Pandey and Varun Mishra supports the emotional part of the story. ‘Nazar Lag Jayegi’ and ‘Bewafa’ take forward the love and breakdown in relationships. The songs do not overshadow the film, but they are not the first thing that comes to mind after the film is over. Final Verdict on the film: The first half of ‘Love Lottery’ wins. When the story that starts with love reaches murder, the film becomes gripping. Akshay Oberoi further strengthens this hold with his acting. The same tension is not there in the second half. The courtroom drama drags a bit and the gender debate is also presented in a more straightforward manner at some places. Still, there is so much suspense in the film that you will want to know till the end who is the murderer and how much truth is there in Karthik’s story. Not a jackpot, but a ‘love lottery’ ticket isn’t a complete loss either.
