The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has released a report on the increasing violence against women and girls in Gaza. It has been said in the report that the victims are being married to the accused in the name of avoiding defamation and maintaining ‘respect’ in the family and society. Recorded cases of child and forced marriages in Gaza have increased by 123%. UNFPA has collected this data from 10 organizations working in Gaza. In addition, 230 women living in the displacement camps of Gaza City and Khan Yunis were interviewed. School rape followed by wedding and celebration at the same location In the report, women described multiple cases of rape in the displacement camps of Gaza City and Khan Yunis. According to him, such incidents took place in tents, schools being used as shelters, streets and even on the sea shore. Attempts were made to conceal many cases where the accused knew the victim. In some cases, the victim was married to the accused or some other person. One woman said: When a rape case comes to light in school, marriages and celebrations take place in the same school the next day. Disabled girls are in greater danger Disabled women and girls are in greatest danger in Gaza. In some cases the accused knew this weakness of theirs. A woman from Gaza City said that a deaf and mute girl remained missing for seven hours. She was crying after coming back, but the family thought she was scared. About two months later, it was revealed that she was pregnant and that she had been raped. The accused could not be traced. In another case, there is mention of a 20 year old woman, who had difficulty in understanding things. Many youths exploited her. According to the woman, she did not even understand properly what was happening to her. Girls who have lost their parents in war are also at risk of marriage at an early age. A woman from Gaza City said that the parents of her family’s two girls, aged 14 and 15, were killed in the war. After this their uncles got both of them married. The woman said that her uncle did not want to bear her responsibilities and expenses. Girls were married at an age when they did not even understand what marriage or life was. UNFPA in its report has considered marriage of girls aged between 12 to 17 years as child marriage. Child marriage was a problem in Gaza even before the war, but its cases were decreasing. A family member is also accused of rape. The report also mentions a case of rape within the family. A widow was raped by her husband’s brother. The woman was sleeping at that time. Later she became pregnant. When the family came to know, the accused’s family tried to get both of them married. The matter was taken to the judge, but the judge refused to officiate the marriage. At that time the woman was in the waiting period prescribed under religious rules after the death of her husband. The judge considered the case to be adultery. Danger of marital rape in crowded camps The report also mentions cases of marital rape. Women said that there is a lot of crowding in tents and other temporary shelters. In such a situation, the personal space between husband and wife has almost ended. Some women said that they refuse to have sex in front of children. After this they were beaten or forced to have sexual intercourse. A woman said that her husband beat her when she refused to have sex. His hand was broken and his eyes were also injured. About 12 people including children lived in his tent. Later the husband also forcibly had sex with her in the school bathroom.
