Girls who have lost their parents in war are also at risk of marrying at an early age. A woman in Gaza City said that the parents of her family’s two girls, aged 14 and 15, were killed in the war. After this their uncles got both of them married. The woman said that her uncle did not want to bear her responsibilities and expenses. Those girls were married when they did not even understand what marriage or life was. The security system has been weakened by the war. According to UNFPA, the reason for the increase in cases of child marriage and forced marriage in Gaza is the deteriorating conditions there. A large number of people have been rendered homeless and essential facilities like hospitals and schools have been destroyed. Due to this, the system to protect women and children has also weakened. Nestor Owomuhangi, UNFPA representative in Palestine, said the long-running war and repeated displacement of people had left the society deeply broken. Cases of sexual violence have increased: According to UNFPA report, cases of sexual violence have also increased in Gaza. These include rape and other types of sexual assault. However, UNFPA said these figures do not show the full picture of sexual violence in Gaza. Many cases go unreported due to fear of stigma, fear of retaliation, and difficulty in filing complaints.
