A former councillor was seriously injured after two unidentified men allegedly opened fire at him in Patna on Wednesday evening.

Anil Yadav was in the basement of his apartment when three men arrived on a motorcycle. CCTV footage showed two of them firing several rounds at Yadav within a few seconds before the attackers fled the spot on the bike.

Locals said the men were carrying firearms while escaping.

Yadav sustained four to five bullet injuries to his hands, lower abdomen and legs, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Krishna Murari Prasad said. He was taken to Udyan Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

Police from the Buddha Colony police station reached the spot soon after the shooting and launched an investigation. Officials are examining CCTV footage from nearby houses to identify the attackers and track them down.

Raids are being conducted at suspected hideouts to apprehend the accused, ASP Prasad said. Police are also investigating the motive behind the attack and examining possible angles, including previous enmity.

The shooting has sparked panic in the residential area, particularly in the apartment complex where the incident took place. A girls’ hostel is reportedly located on the first floor of the building.

Jan Suraaj MLA Prashant Kishor visited Yadav at the hospital and described the city’s law-and-order situation as “jungle raj”. “The police force is controlled by the liquor mafia and goons. The ministers and officials have no control. Internal infighting is preventing the government from appointing a full-time Director General of Police,” he alleged.

Yadav is a former councillor of Ward Number 24 of the Patna Municipal Corporation. His wife, Gyanwati Devi, is currently the councillor representing the ward.

Police are also examining whether Wednesday’s shooting is connected to the killing of the couple’s son, who was reportedly shot dead a few days ago.
