Two people, including an eight-year-old girl, were killed and several others were injured after an electrocution incident near a Ganapati pandal in Mumbai’s Lalbaug area early Sunday, as large crowds gathered in the area amid the ongoing Ganapati festival.
The incident took place at around 2.20 am near the Kalachowki Vibhag Sarvajanik Ustav Mandal on Dattaram Lad Marg in Kalachowki, according to the information available.
At the time, the Lalbaug area was witnessing massive crowds as devotees gathered amid the ongoing celebrations.
The electrocution incident resulted in the deaths of two people, one of whom was an eight-year-old girl. Several others were injured in the incident.
Further details regarding the circumstances that led to the electrocution and the identities of those affected were not known.
The incident comes as Mumbai continues to witness large-scale participation in the 12-day Ganapati festival, which began on September 14 and is scheduled to conclude on Anant Chaturdashi on September 25.
Idol immersion activities have accompanied the festival at different locations across the city.

The incident came amid the ongoing Ganapati festival, with 21,104 Ganesh and Hartalika idols immersed in Mumbai till 9 pm Saturday.
According to a PTI report, a total of 21,104 idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Hartalika (Parvati) had been immersed in different water bodies in Mumbai till 9 pm on Saturday, the sixth day of the festival.
Civic officials said that no untoward incident had been reported during the immersion activities up to that point.
The PTI report said the figure included 18,308 household Lord Ganesh idols and 2,734 idols of Goddess Gauri.
In addition, 62 idols of Sarvajanik Ganesh mandals, or community groups, were immersed during the period.
The report mentioned that according to different traditions, Lord Ganesh idols are immersed on the first-and-a-half day, third day, fifth day, sixth day, seventh day and on Anant Chaturdashi, which is the concluding day of the festival.
On the fifth day of Ganapati immersion, which began on Friday and continued until 6 am on Saturday, a total of 37,843 idols were immersed. These included 35,843 household Ganapati idols, 1,030 idols of community Ganapati idols and 129 idols of Goddess Hartalika.
Earlier, during the one-and-a-half-day immersion on September 15-16, a total of 61,640 Ganesh and Hartalika idols were immersed in water bodies across Mumbai.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made arrangements for idol immersion at sites across the city, including artificial ponds, for devotees participating in the festival.
