The Supreme Court on Friday told the young lawyers present in the court room that without training with seniors, they will not be able to learn the nuances of the profession. Young lawyers should know what to say and what not to say in the court.
These comments were made by the bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih during the hearing of a petition related to an order of the Bombay High Court.
Justice Nagarathna said that some youth are starting their work directly without training. This is simply not true.
Youngsters go to seniors, they will show the right direction
Justice Nagarathna said that young lawyers should approach seniors. Seniors will show them the right direction. He said, “We know that the youth these days are ambitious. But without training with seniors, they will not be able to learn the work. This process has been going on from generation to generation. This is how the nuances and good practices of a respectable profession are passed on.”
Skills required after degree and office
The bench said that young lawyers should also sit in the court and watch the proceedings. The bench said- “Young lawyers are starting their offices soon after obtaining their degree. But where are the soft skills? You may have the hardware, but soft skills have to be developed every day.”
Justice Nagarathna said, “We are concerned about the future of the Bar and the Bar. By watching the court proceedings, young lawyers can understand what mistakes should not be made.
Justice Nagarathna recalls his early days
Justice Nagarathna recalls his early days as a lawyer. She said, “When I was young, I would have only one case or one mention every now and then. But I would go and sit in some court halls. Especially, in the courts of tough judges.”
Justice Nagarathna said that by doing this she got used to the strict attitude of the judges. The next time the case came up there, he knew in advance how to respond and what to say after seeing the judge.
