India’s net direct tax collections increased 12.96 per cent year-on-year to Rs 12.12 lakh crore as of September 17 in FY27, according to data released by the Income Tax Department.

Advance tax collections, an important indicator of tax payments made ahead of final assessment, rose 16.18 per cent to Rs 5.22 lakh crore during the period.

Corporate advance tax collections recorded a stronger growth of 18.09 per cent, rising to Rs 4.16 lakh crore from Rs 3.52 lakh crore a year earlier. Non-corporate advance tax collections grew 9.24 per cent to Rs 1.06 lakh crore from Rs 96,904 crore in the year-ago period.

Gross direct tax collections rise 15%

Gross direct tax collections stood at Rs 14.32 lakh crore as of September 17, marking a 15.19 per cent increase from Rs 12.44 lakh crore during the corresponding period last year.

However, refunds rose at a faster pace, increasing 29.19 per cent to Rs 2.20 lakh crore from Rs 1.70 lakh crore a year earlier. As a result, the growth in net direct tax collections was lower than the increase in gross collections.

After adjusting for refunds, net direct tax collections stood at Rs 12,12,410.71 crore, compared with Rs 10,73,272.17 crore as of September 17, 2025.

Corporate tax collections rise

Corporate tax contributed Rs 5.56 lakh crore to net direct tax collections, up from Rs 4.65 lakh crore in the corresponding period last year.

Net non-corporate tax collections stood at Rs 6.16 lakh crore, compared with Rs 5.81 lakh crore a year earlier.

Securities Transaction Tax (STT) collections also recorded a sharp increase, rising to Rs 40,214.36 crore from Rs 26,305.72 crore in the year-ago period.

Advance tax collections gain 16.18%

Total advance tax collections rose to Rs 5,21,940.72 crore as of September 17, compared with Rs 4,49,256.41 crore a year earlier.

The increase was led by corporate taxpayers, whose advance tax payments rose to Rs 4,16,083.59 crore from Rs 3,52,351.59 crore.

Non-corporate advance tax collections increased to Rs 1,05,856.69 crore from Rs 96,904.05 crore during the same period.

The data shows that while direct tax collections have continued to grow in the first half of FY27, the sharp rise in refunds has moderated the pace of growth in net collections. Gross collections increased 15.19 per cent, compared with a 29.19 per cent rise in refunds, resulting in a 12.96 per cent increase in net collections.

The trend in advance tax payments, along with the movement in gross collections and refunds, will remain important for the overall trajectory of direct tax collections during FY27.
