Attempt to create a third front is not new
It is noteworthy that attempts to form a third front without Congress have been made many times before in Indian politics. In 2013, Mamata Banerjee had raised the issue of ‘Federal Front’ by bringing together non-Congress and non-BJP parties. A few years later, the then Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrashekhar Rao also took this idea forward. He had met several regional leaders, including Mamata Banerjee and Naveen Patnaik, but the effort could not move forward before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal had also taken the initiative to form a ‘Progressive Group of States’ by bringing together the Chief Ministers of the opposition states. However, this idea also could not be transformed into a broad national front.
