Indian spinner has been ruled out of Afghanistan T20 series due to injury. He has a side strain. According to PTI report, a BCCI source said that Varun’s MRI has revealed a new injury. His chances of playing in the Asian Games are also less.

Varun played the first T-20 match of the series on Sunday. India won this match by 7 wickets. Varun took 1 wicket for 16 runs in 4 overs. His replacement has not been announced.

Varun was making a comeback in this series after recovering from injury. Due to his injury again, questions are being raised on BCCI’s Bengaluru-based Center of Excellence (CoE).

Varun was returning after 2 months

Varun was away from international cricket for about two months. He had earlier suffered a problem in his left hamstring while playing the third T20 match against England in July. After this, grade-2 hamstring injury was revealed in the scan.

Due to this injury, he was out of the Zimbabwe T-20 series. Then BCCI had told that Varun will go to CoE for further treatment and management. After completing rehabilitation, he made a comeback in the Afghanistan series.

Harshit Rana was also injured during rehab

Before Varun, Harshit Rana also got injured again during rehabilitation in CoE. Rana has been out of both the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games.

Earlier BCCI had said that Rana was making good progress in rehabilitation. After this, he suffered a rectus femoris strain while bowling during a match simulation on 7 September. In his place, Yash Thakur was included in the Afghanistan series and Asian Games.

Questions raised again on CoE’s injury management

In recent times, questions have been raised regarding injury management at BCCI’s Center of Excellence. However, former cricketer VVS Laxman had refused to consider CoE guilty on this. He said- ‘A cricketer is not a machine. It is not that every time he will recover from injury quickly.

Laxman said that the fitness rules are strict. Besides, the body nature of all the players is also different. Because of this, no player is able to fit completely within the stipulated time frame. He had said- ‘From the time the injury is detected till the time the player becomes fit, it is monitored. On this basis his workload is increased.

Laxman explained the player’s process from injury to fitness

Laxman gave the example of Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudarshan to explain his point. He had said that the selectors ask for the player’s fitness report from the CoE. The CoE sends this report to the President of the Selection Committee. Its copy is also given to the head coaches of both the teams and BCCI.

Laxman said- ‘There is always a star symbol in front of the names of Bumrah and Sudarshan. This means- will play if you remain fit. If the player’s progress is slow, information is given to the selection committee president and head coach.
