Germany’s Alexander Zverev has made it to his third consecutive Grand Slam final. World No. 1 Zverev defeated Karen Khachanov of Russia 6-3, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6) in the semi-finals of the US Open played in New York on Friday. Now he will face America’s Ben Shelton or Frances Tiafoe in the final on Sunday.
Zverev won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open this year and then reached the Wimbledon final, where he lost to Yannick Sinner. Now he has a chance to win his second major trophy this year. This will be the sixth Grand Slam final of his career.
Both won despite falling behind in the tiebreaker.
Khachanov came back from 0-2 down in the second set by breaking Zverev’s serve. After this the set reached tiebreaker. Here Khachanov saved two set points from Zverev, but Zverev kept the pressure on by winning a long 34-shot rally and won the set 7-6 (7).
In the third set too, Khachanov took a lead of 3-0 and then 5-2 in the tiebreaker. At one point it seemed that the match might go to the fourth set, but Zverev won consecutive points to level the score and won the set 7-6 (6).
After playing five sets each in the first two rounds, Zverev has won 13 consecutive sets after this. The consistency of his serve and groundstrokes ultimately fended off Khachanov’s challenge in the semi-finals.
Khachanov’s forehand did not support him at crucial moments
Despite poor form this season, Khachanov performed brilliantly at the US Open and reached the Grand Slam semi-finals for the third time. His current ranking is 50, while he has reached number eight in his career.
He gave Zverev a tough fight in the second and third sets, but made mistakes with his forehand at crucial moments. Zverev, on the other hand, maintained his serve and baseline game under pressure.
Grand Slam record 24-2 in 2026
With this victory, Zverev’s record in Grand Slam matches this season becomes 24-2. After becoming champion in the French Open, he played the final of Wimbledon and has now reached the title match of the US Open.
This is the first time that Zverev has made three consecutive Grand Slam finals. His consistency in Grand Slams this year looks completely different from that of a player who has come close and missed the title several times.
Opportunity to erase the pain of 2020 defeat
Zverev’s most bitter memory from the US Open is the 2020 final. He then won the first two sets against Dominic Thiem and at one time was just one set away from the title.
Despite this, Thiem made a comeback and won the match in the tiebreaker of the fifth set. Thiem became the first player since 1949 to win the title after losing the first two sets in the US Open final.
Six years later, Zverev has a chance to fulfill that unfulfilled dream in the same tournament.
Zverev said – I hope that the dream of Americans will not be fulfilled
“Hopefully I won’t let the Americans’ dream of winning the trophy come true on Sunday,” Zverev said after the win.
He said that he has struggled a lot at the Grand Slam level and has come very close to the title many times. According to him, perhaps this year things are going in his favor and this could be his year.
Will compete with American player in the final
In the second semi-final, eighth seed Ben Shelton and 11th seed Frances Tiafoe will face each other. Both have played US Open semi-finals before, but have not yet reached the final of any Grand Slam.
If any of these Americans reaches the final, then for the first time since 2003, an American male player will play to win the US Open title. That year Andy Roddick became champion.
Whether the challenge for Zverev is Shelton or Tiafoe, after this year’s performance he will have a strong chance of winning his first US Open title.
Townsend-Siniakova Won US Open women’s doubles title;
Czech Republic’s Kateryna Siniakova and America’s Taylor Townsend won the US Open women’s doubles title. The top seeded pair defeated American wild card pair Ashlyn Kruger and Robin Montgomery 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 in New York. With this win, both of them completed their career Grand Slam by winning all four Grand Slam titles as a pair.
Siniakova and Townsend won Wimbledon in 2024, Australian Open in 2025 and French Open this year. Along with the US Open trophy, he won all four majors.
Siniakova completed career slam with two different partners
This is the 12th Grand Slam women’s doubles title for 30-year-old Siniakova. She joins eight women to win at least 12 Grand Slam doubles titles in the Open Era.
She also became the first player to complete the Career Grand Slam with two different partners. Earlier, she had won all four Grand Slam titles with her compatriot Barbora Krejcikova.
