Hotel prices are increasing in Delhi due to BRICS Summit.
The 18th BRICS Leaders Summit will be held on 12 and 13 September in New Delhi. This event will be organized in Bharat Mandapam.
Tomorrow PM Modi will host many world leaders including Putin and Xi Jinping. The dinner menu includes Galouti Kebab from UP, Bhakarwadi from Maharashtra and Kachori from Rajasthan.
At the same time, preparations to welcome guests in luxury hotels have been going on for several weeks. This includes regional Indian cuisine, signature menus, traditional gifts and customized personal amenities.
Russian President Putin is expected to stay at ITC Maurya and Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to stay at Taj Palace. Whereas, the UAE led delegation will stay at The Leela Palace and the Egyptian delegation will stay at Sheraton New Delhi.
Demand increased in hotels due to summit
Amidst the summit, the demand for rooms in luxury hotels of the capital has increased rapidly. Many major hotels have very few or no rooms left around the summit dates.
Room rents have also increased sharply due to demand from delegations, security personnel, media and other officials.
Around 90% of The Lalit’s 460 rooms will be occupied during the summit. The average daily hotel fare will be 30 to 40% more than normal.
The menu at The Leela Palace includes Dal Makhani, Biryani, Delhi Style Chaat and millet dishes like Sattu, Bajra and Ragi Dosa along with Indian fruits. Millets cookies, granola bars and special edible lotus made from rose, saffron and cardamom are also being served here.
Special menu in The Lalit and Taj Mahal hotels also
Taj Mahal Hotel is offering famous snacks from across the country. These include spiced walnuts of Kashmir, maida cashew nuts of Old Delhi, bhakarwadi of Maharashtra, mini kachori of Rajasthan, kucho nimki of Bengal and murukku of Tamil Nadu.
The Lalit offers galouti kebabs, tandoori rotis and millet-sorghum millet dishes along with South Indian dosas and appams. Millets cookies, granola bars and special edible lotus made from rose, saffron and cardamom are also being served here.
One District One Product stalls at Bharat Mandapam
‘One District One Product’ exhibition has also been organized at the BRICS conference. It showcases 70 unique art and handloom products from across the country.
This exhibition is part of a campaign to showcase more than 1,200 unique products from 770 districts to the world.
It has figures of three women. They are decked up in traditional sarees and jewellery. This style is typical of the famous ‘Kondapalli’ or ‘Ettikopakka’ toys of Andhra Pradesh.
Importance of dinner diplomacy
At large events such as the BRICS summit, ‘dinner diplomacy’ refers to informal conversations over the dinner table, moving away from formal meetings and strict protocols.
Eating food together creates a comfortable atmosphere between leaders, which makes it easier to reduce tension, increase mutual trust and openly discuss controversial issues.
Many times, difficult agreements which cannot be resolved in formal discussions in closed rooms, their ground is prepared through informal conversations during dinners like this.
