Admission to an IIT is a dream for millions of students across the country. To get there, aspirants prepare for highly competitive national-level entrance exams such as JEE Advanced, GATE and JAM. But a strong rank in these exams can offer more than just a seat at an IIT. Several IITs provide merit-based scholarships and fellowships to high-performing students, with benefits varying by institute, course and eligibility criteria.

While some scholarships offer undergraduate students financial assistance running into lakhs of rupees annually, others provide substantial monthly fellowships for doctoral research. IIT Kharagpur, for instance, has introduced a special fellowship as part of its Platinum Jubilee celebrations, while IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi offer separate schemes for meritorious students.

IIT Kharagpur: Fellowship Of Up To Rs 90,000 Per Month

IIT Kharagpur is celebrating its Platinum Jubilee this year, marking 75 years of the institute’s contributions to education, research and innovation. As part of the celebrations, the institute has launched the Director Platinum Jubilee Excellence Fellowship (DPEF) 2026. The scheme aims to encourage high-performing candidates in national-level entrance examinations to pursue higher education and research at IIT Kharagpur.

Candidates who secure a rank among the top 50 in GATE 2026 and choose to pursue a PhD at IIT Kharagpur can receive the fellowship, subject to meeting the institute’s PhD admission requirements.

Selected scholars will receive Rs 80,000 per month for the first two years, followed by Rs 90,000 per month for the next three years, subject to the applicable eligibility and continuation criteria.

Candidates do not need to submit a separate application for the fellowship. Eligible applicants can apply through IIT Kharagpur’s ongoing rolling PhD admission process.

Top 50 JAM Rankers Can Also Benefit

The DPEF scheme is not restricted to GATE rankers. Candidates who secure ranks 1 to 50 in JAM 2026 can also benefit if they choose to pursue a master’s degree at IIT Kharagpur, subject to the applicable conditions.

The Platinum Jubilee initiative therefore extends merit-based financial support to high-performing candidates in GATE and JAM, in addition to the institute’s broader academic opportunities.

For PhD scholars, the fellowship amount can go up to Rs 90,000 per month.

IIT Kanpur: Top 100 JEE Advanced Rankers Can Get Rs 3 Lakh A Year

IIT Kanpur offers significant financial assistance through its Bright Minds Scholarship, aimed at students who secure top ranks in JEE Advanced.

The scholarship is available to students who rank among the top 100 in the JEE Advanced all-India ranking and enrol in the BTech or BS programme at IIT Kanpur.

Selected students receive Rs 3 lakh per year, with the support potentially continuing throughout the four-year undergraduate programme, provided they maintain a CPI of at least 8.0 each year.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Rs 2 lakh of the annual amount is allocated towards tuition fees, while the remaining Rs 1 lakh covers expenses such as hostel and mess fees, books, medical insurance and other living costs.

The objective is to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent high-performing students from pursuing their studies at IIT Kanpur.

IIT Roorkee: Rs 25,000 Per Month For Top 250 JEE Advanced Rankers

IIT Roorkee also offers a merit-based scholarship for high-performing JEE Advanced candidates.

Under the James Thomson Scholarship, students who secure an All India Rank of up to 250 in JEE Advanced and are admitted to IIT Roorkee are eligible for the scholarship, subject to the institute’s conditions.

Eligible students receive Rs 25,000 per month for the duration of the programme.

However, the scholarship is linked to academic performance. Students must maintain a CGPA of at least 8.0 at the end of each academic year for the scholarship to continue.

IIT Delhi Checks JEE Advanced Rank Plus Family Income

At IIT Delhi, some scholarship schemes take both academic merit and financial circumstances into account. The Amit and Deepali Sinha Foundation Scholarship is available to first-year undergraduate students enrolled in BTech or dual-degree programmes. According to IIT Delhi’s scholarship information, 15 students are selected based on their JEE Advanced rank, subject to the prescribed eligibility conditions.

Applicants must also meet the family income criterion, with annual family income required to be below Rs 9 lakh. Students availing themselves of the Vidya Lakshmi Loan Scheme are not eligible.

IIT Delhi To Offer Rs 10 Crore Endowment For Top Five Students

IIT Delhi has also received a Rs 10 crore endowment from alumnus Dr Amit Sinha to establish full-ride fellowships for five top-performing undergraduate students selected on the basis of JEE Advanced.

The fellowships will be offered to the top five eligible students enrolling at the institute each year. One of the five fellowships has been earmarked for a top female JEE ranker admitted to IIT Delhi, with the aim of encouraging greater participation of women in STEM fields.

For students preparing for JEE Advanced, GATE and JAM, a strong rank can open doors beyond admission to an IIT. At some institutes, it can also bring substantial financial support during undergraduate, postgraduate or doctoral studies.
