India’s Kidambi Srikanth’s Loses In China Masters Quarterfinals

In his first quarterfinal appearance at a BWF World Tour Super 750 event or above in three years, Kidambi Srikanth lost to Lee Cheuk Yiu.

Kidambi Srikanth’s impressive run at the China Masters came to an end in the quarterfinals on Friday, with Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu defeating the Indian 21-16, 21-16 at the Shenzhen Arena.

The BWF Super 750 tournament marked Srikanth’s first appearance in the quarterfinals of a BWF World Tour Super 750 event or higher in three years. However, he could not extend his campaign against Lee, who has now beaten him in each of their last four meetings.

Srikanth’s only victory over Lee came in the opening round of the 2018 India Open.

The Indian had entered the last eight after producing a strong performance against Canadian World No. 9 Victor Lai in the pre-quarterfinals. Srikanth, who had recently won a bronze medal at the World Championships, was beaten 21-18, 21-19 by the Indian.

His tournament began with another convincing victory, as he defeated Chinese Taipei’s World No. 21 Chi Yu-jen 21-16, 21-15 in just 35 minutes.

With Srikanth’s exit, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty remain India’s only challenge at the Super 750 event. The former World No. 1 pair will face Denmark’s Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen later on Friday for a semifinal spot.

Satwik and Chirag booked their quarterfinal place by overcoming France’s Toma Junior Popov and Christo Popov 21-17, 22-24, 21-9.

India’s women’s singles campaign had already concluded on Thursday, when Tanvi Sharma went down 21-17, 18-21, 21-16 to Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki.

In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and Olympian Tanisha Crasto were eliminated in the second round after losing 21-18, 21-18 to Chinese Taipei’s Liu Kuang-Heng and Hsu Yin-Hui.
