Police in Telangana are investigating the recovery of 160 electric detonators from a private venture in Bolaram, within the limits of the Bollaram police station in Medchal-Malkajgiri district.
The detonators were discovered in eight separate bundles, prompting the police to launch an inquiry into how they ended up at the site and who had stored them there.
According to a police official, “The detonators were found in a private venture, and we suspect they were being used by land developers. We are currently investigating the matter.”
160 Detonators Found In Eight Bundles
The recovered material consists of 33A-size commercial electric detonators, which are generally used in controlled blasting operations. Such detonators can be used in construction, quarrying and mining activities where rock or other hard material has to be removed. The detonators cost about Rs 500 each.
Police are now examining whether the detonators were procured for legitimate land-development work and subsequently abandoned at the site.
Investigators are also attempting to identify the contractors or developers who may have handled the explosives and determine when they were brought to the area.
Detonators Suspected To Be Linked To Land Work
Investigators suspect the explosives could have been brought to the location by land developers for blasting and granite-breaking activities. Such detonators are commonly used along with explosives for controlled blasting in construction and quarrying operations.
The recovery comes amid a separate investigation into the theft of firearms and ammunition from the Madras Regimental armoury in the Bolaram area. However, police are treating the detonator recovery as a separate matter at this stage.
Detonators Discovered During Search Near Army Area
The recovery took place as security personnel were searching areas around the Army establishment in Bolaram. The discovery was made near the rear portion of the firing range, in an area adjoining a private residential venture, The Times Of India reported.
The detonators were reportedly found stored together in a green plastic bucket, raising questions about who had brought them to the location and why they had been left there.
The material was subsequently taken into police custody as investigators began examining whether it was connected to any authorised blasting activity carried out at the private venture.
Police probe source of detonators
The Bollaram police are now trying to establish who procured the detonators, when they were brought to the private venture and whether they were used during any land development or granite-breaking work.
After being informed by Army personnel, police took the detonators into custody and registered a suo motu case under the Explosive Substances Act.
The circumstances surrounding their storage at the site are also being examined as part of the investigation.
