Manchester United go past Liverpool with 80 Premier League own goals. Bruno Fernandes stars in victory over Ipswich Town, bagging a hat-trick and an assist.

Bruno Fernandes-led Manchester United on Sunday, August 30, went past Liverpool to become the most benefited team through own goals in the history of the English Premier League, now with 80 in their kitty, as Liverpool stands second at 79.
After suffering a nightmare 0-2 loss to Hull last weekend, the Red Devils were once again under pressure against a newly promoted team, with Leif Davis opening the scoring for the Tractor Boys.
But Fernandes blasted home to level before half-time and then converted from the penalty spot after a Jacob Greaves own goal put United in front.
11 minutes into the second half, the ball came off Harry Maguire’s arm before he fired a shot and the goal would have been ruled out had it found the net.
But because the effort was heading off target and deflected in off Greaves, it was allowed to stand as it wasn’t deemed a handball leading to a goal.
Greaves was still clearing his head from that setback when he chopped down Matheus Cunha as he bore down on goal.
The first time United benefited from an own goal in the Premier League was during the inaugural season in 1993, when they beat Chelsea 3-0.
Chelsea defender Steve Clarke turned the ball into his own net in the 44th minute, just two minutes after Mark Hughes had opened the scoring for United. Eric Cantona then added a third after the break.
The Greaves own goal against Ipswich on Sunday therefore came more than 33 years after United’s first Premier League benefit from an own goal.
Meanwhile, Fernandes completed his hat-trick from close range before adding an assist to his fine afternoon for Bryan Mbeumo.
It was Fernandes’ second Premier League hat-trick for the Red Devils, with his previous treble coming in Manchester United’s opening home match of a league season as well, against Leeds United in the 2021-22 campaign.
