Indian Army aviation pilots on Saturday conducted a rescue operation on the Nun-Kun mountain located near the Kargil area of Ladakh and rescued a patient.
The rescue operation was extremely difficult amidst strong winds and extremely difficult mountainous terrain at an altitude of 18,600 feet. There was no normal landing space for landing helicopters on the steep slope.
The pilots kept the helicopter stable at a very low altitude. After this, just one skid of the helicopter rested on the slope and kept it balanced. After this the patient was airlifted.

Heavy items removed from helicopter before rescue operation
The reduced air pressure at an altitude of 18,600 feet reduces the engine’s efficiency and the lift provided by the rotor. In order to fly in this situation, all non-essential equipment was removed from the helicopter.
Only limited fuel was kept in the helicopter, so that the lift capacity could be increased. Also, enough fuel is left to cover the distance required to complete the patient evacuation operation.
