A 28-year-old social media influencer from Chandigarh, Manjeet Kaur, died at PGIMER on August 26, nearly eight weeks after she was allegedly abducted, assaulted and set on fire in Morinda, Punjab. Manjeet Kaur was allegedly abducted on the night of July 3 after two acquaintances, identified by her mother as Shubhi and Pinda, called her to meet near a liquor shop in Sector 34, Chandigarh. According to the complaint filed by her mother, Kanta Devi, the two allegedly forced Manjeet Kaur into a car and drove her to Morinda.

According to the complaint, Manjeet Kaur was assaulted, tied to a mulberry tree and allegedly set on fire. An acquaintance who spotted her engulfed in flames used a blanket to put out the fire and took her to a hospital in Morinda. She was later shifted to a hospital in Mohali before being referred to PGIMER in Chandigarh on July 9 because of the severity of her injuries.

Manjeet Kaur remained unconscious at PGIMER for several weeks. She briefly regained consciousness on August 5 and, according to her family, recounted the alleged attack to them. Her condition subsequently deteriorated despite treatment. She died from her severe burn injuries on August 26.

Following her death, Chandigarh Police registered an FIR at the Sector 34 police station under Sections 140(1) for kidnapping, 103(1) for murder and 3(5) for joint criminal liability under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police have named Shubhi and Pinda as suspects and are conducting raids to trace them.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage along the route from Sector 34 in Chandigarh to Morinda to establish the suspects’ movements. Police are also questioning Manjeet Kaur’s family members and friends as part of the investigation.
