For Ravindra Chavan, the most meaningful Raksha Bandhan gift this year was not something wrapped in a box. It was a promise to stand by young girls as they work towards their dreams. Chavan, BJP Maharashtra president and MLA, celebrated Raksha Bandhan with thousands of women and girls in Kalyan-Dombivli, with school and college students among those who tied rakhis on his wrist.

Several young women undergoing pre-recruitment training for the armed forces and police at the New Force Academy in Dombivli also participated in the celebrations. It was the rakhis tied by some of the youngest participants that appeared to leave a lasting impression on Chavan. Speaking on the occasion, he said the affection of the girls and the dreams reflected in their eyes had made the festival particularly special for him.

Chavan said many of these girls may be young, but their ambitions are much bigger. He promised to support them in their journey towards achieving those goals and becoming financially and personally independent.

“Helping them give wings to their dreams, stand on their own feet and face life with confidence will be my resolve,” he said, adding that he would contribute in whatever way he could to their journey.

The celebrations were held at multiple locations in Kalyan and Dombivli, including the Swatantryaveer Savarkar memorial and Chavan’s public relations office at Samrat Chowk.

For the young girls who tied rakhis, the occasion was therefore about more than a customary celebration. Chavan sought to turn the traditional promise associated with Raksha Bandhan into a commitment to support their aspirations—making their dreams the gift he said he wanted to give back.
