The death toll from devastating floods and landslides in Nepal and China’s Tibet has risen to 193, while 1,688 people remain missing, according to updated figures shared by BNO News on Thursday.
Nepal has reported 190 deaths and 1,130 people missing, while three people have died and 558 remain unaccounted for in China’s Tibet.
The combined toll stands at 193 dead and 1,688 missing. The casualty figures are expected to rise as rescue and search operations continue across the affected areas.
The disaster began near the Nepal-China border and rapidly travelled downstream, causing widespread destruction across several districts. Roads and bridges were washed away, villages were inundated, and multiple hydropower projects were damaged.
The scale of the disaster remains unclear, with authorities on both sides of the border continuing to search for missing people and verify casualty figures.
Rasuwa, Dhading Among Worst-Hit Districts
Rasuwa and Dhading suffered some of the worst damage before the floodwaters moved downstream towards Nuwakot, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahu and Nawalparasi East.
The devastating flash floods have caused extensive damage in Nuwakot’s worst-affected Devighat area, leaving roads and buildings damaged and several people stranded without homes. Visuals from the aftermath showed damaged vehicles, structures and roads, highlighting the scale of destruction caused by the disaster.
The affected locations are spread across an area ranging from around 70 km to almost 200 km from Kathmandu.
Homes, vehicles, roads and bridges were destroyed by the powerful floodwaters. Officials said 19 motorable bridges were washed away, while the 42-km road linking Betrawati in Nuwakot with the Rasuwagadhi border crossing was also damaged.
Footage from the affected region showed torrents of muddy water rushing through populated areas, carrying rocks and debris. In one video, a multi-storey structure was swept away, while other visuals showed vehicles being dragged through floodwaters and bridges collapsing within seconds.
“There is devastation everywhere we look,” Tula Bahadur BK, a health worker in Rasuwa, told Reuters. “The settlements next to the river have been completely swept away. Five of my own relatives are missing,” he added.
