Elon Musk and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry at the site of Starbase, Louisiana. Elon Musk arrived by helicopter for this inspection.

Elon Musk’s company SpaceX is building the world’s largest rocket launch complex in southern Louisiana, America. The company will invest 100 billion dollars i.e. about ₹ 9.50 lakh crore on this project. ‘Starbase, Louisiana’ will be SpaceX’s second ‘Starbase’ campus.

This new spaceport will be spread over 1.25 lakh acres on Pican Island in Louisiana, which is eight times larger than the city of Manhattan in New York. From here, SpaceX’s next-generation rocket ‘Starship’ and AI based satellites will be sent into space. Construction is expected to start in 2029.

3,000 new jobs will be available, average salary will be ₹ 88 lakh annually

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has called it a big step for the state’s economy. According to Landry, this spaceport will create at least 3 thousand direct jobs in the area.

The average annual salary of the employees working here will be $ 92,600, or about Rs 88 lakh, which is almost double the current average income of Vermilion Parish. “This project will bring jobs, progress to communities and protection to our coastal areas,” the Governor said.

The campus will be ‘self-sustaining’, will produce fuel and electricity itself

SpaceX President Gwynn Shotwell said that this campus will be completely ‘self-sustaining’.

Own fuel and electricity: Methane gas for rocket propellant will be produced and an electricity generation facility will be installed within the complex.

Shipping and Transport: Deep-water shipping ports and vehicle processing units will be built to transport Starship rockets. A dedicated airport can also be built.

Shotwell said the facility aims to support thousands of Starship flights each year, though that will depend on engineering and regulatory approvals.

There will be no rocket manufacturing but only launching.

This Louisiana campus will be quite different from SpaceX’s Texas-based ‘Starbase’. The rockets are manufactured and assembled in Texas, while the Louisiana facility will not manufacture rockets. Its main focus will be only on high-frequency i.e. fast launching.

The geographical position of Pican Island is such that rockets can be easily sent into sun-synchronous orbit from here. This orbit is considered most suitable for solar-powered satellites.

SpaceX, the company of world's richest businessman Elon Musk, has built this rocket. The Starship spacecraft (top) and Super Heavy booster (bottom) are collectively called 'Starship'.

Musk achieves two big goals through Louisiana Spaceport…

  • Rapidly expanding Starlink constellation.
  • Deploying 10 lakh AI satellites in space.

Knowledge Part: What is ‘Sun-Synchronous Orbit’?

This is an orbit around the Earth in which the satellite always travels at the same angle to the Sun. That means wherever the satellite passes, there is always sunlight. This orbit is considered best for solar-powered satellites and Earth-observation satellites.
