Veteran filmmaker Kuku Kohli, who launched Ajay Devgan with the film Phool Aur Kaante, died on Tuesday at the age of 77. He breathed his last at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai. Kuku Kohli had a heart attack. Filmmaker Ashok Pandit confirmed this.
Ajay Devgan’s film Phool Aur Kaante was also Kuku Kohli’s first film as a director. This film was a superhit. After this, Kuku Kohli made films like Kohram, Suhaag, Haqiqat and Zulmi.
Started career by working with Raj Kapoor
Kuku Kohli started his film career by working with Raj Kapoor. He stayed with him for many years and learned the nuances of film making. Later he was the second unit director in the film Betaab. This film starring Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh was a hit. After this he also worked in Arjun.
In 1991, Kuku Kohli debuted as a director with Phool Aur Kaante. The film was a hit and Ajay Devgan got recognition in Bollywood. After this he made films like Kohram and Suhaag. Ajay Devgan and Akshay Kumar were seen together for the first time in Suhaag.
His film Haqeeqat was released in 1995. It starred Ajay Devgan and Tabu. The film received nominations in seven categories at the Filmfare Awards. Kuku also received a nomination for Best Director.
After this he made films like Zulmi, Anari No. 1 and Yeh Dil Aashikana. His last film Woh Tera Naam Tha was released in 2004.
