The country’s largest IT company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has come into controversy regarding monitoring of employees. According to the report, the company is using monitoring tools on the laptops and workstations of its employees.

However, TCS says that the purpose of these tools is not to monitor the individual activities of any employee, but to improve the overall performance and system security of the entire network.

Main cause of controversy: Tracking of personal activity

  • The controversy begins when these tools go beyond system-level information and start keeping detailed records of an employee’s personal work and activities.
  • A Money Control report claimed that TCS’s tools have application-level visibility.
  • On the other hand, TCS has clarified in its official statement that their monitoring is limited to network performance only at the macro-level and they do not track the activities of individual employees.

Meta has also faced criticism on employee monitoring

This issue of workplace monitoring is not limited to TCS only. Such cases have already come to light in the global tech industry. Giant tech company Meta also faced criticism during one of its AI-related projects.

Meta had introduced a system that could collect data on employees’ keystrokes and mouse activity. Later, due to huge protests, Meta had to give the employees the option to stop data collection and ask for exemption.

Legal rules and future status

This issue of monitoring of employees has also come under legal scrutiny in different countries. The rules and regulations regarding employee monitoring vary greatly across jurisdictions and countries.

At present, the biggest issue in this whole matter remains that what information can TCS tools technically access and how that data is actually being used.

What is the difference between macro-level and employee-level monitoring?

  • Macro-level monitoring: In this, it is only seen how much load is there on the network, how the internet speed is available and whether there is any cyber attack or technical fault. It has nothing to do with any person’s personal files or activities.
  • Employee-Level Monitoring: In this, the details of which website the employee opened, what he typed on the keyboard (keystrokes), how many times he moved the mouse and how much time he spent on which application is tracked.
