The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has decided to establish a bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir in Ladakh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Thursday.

The move is aimed at improving access to justice for people living in the remote and geographically challenging areas of Ladakh, Shah said.

In a post on X, Shah said the new High Court bench would reduce the time required for residents to access legal services to which they are entitled.

The Union Home Minister said the government remains committed to the all-round development of Ladakh and ensuring constitutional safeguards for its people.

The decision is expected to make it easier for residents of Ladakh to access the High Court without having to undertake lengthy journeys to seek legal remedies.

Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019 following the reorganisation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
