Jason Arde, the youngest black professor at England’s Cambridge University, died at the age of 41. He used to do research and teaching on subjects related to education and society. He was found unconscious at his home in Battersea, South London, at around 3 pm on Friday afternoon. The ambulance team tried to save him, but he died. According to the police, his death occurred suddenly. So far no evidence has been found to consider the death suspicious. Police are in touch with the family and are investigating the matter. Resigned from Cambridge a few days before his death: Jason Arde resigned from Cambridge University on 5 August. This decision came amidst questions raised regarding some of his research. Cambridge University had also started an investigation into his appointment and his functioning at the university. The university was investigating how Arde got the professorship in 2022 and what happened during his tenure. After resigning, Arde said that the continuous allegations and public comments made about him had a deep impact on him. There were allegations of copying on some parts of the research. Arde did his PhD from Liverpool John Moores University, UK in 2015. During this time he wrote a research report. Later, some parts of his research were accused of using the work written by other people in his research without giving proper credit. In simple language, he was accused of cheating in research. Arde had termed these allegations as false. After this, allegations of mistakes were made in some of his other research also. Questions were raised on the appointment too. There was controversy regarding Arde’s appointment in Cambridge. Some had alleged that they were hired as part of the university’s diversity policy rather than based on their qualifications. Such policies are generally referred to as DEI. This means that different communities and under-represented people are given equal opportunities in institutions and their participation is increased. However, Britain’s teachers union leader Daniel Kabide defended Arde. He had said that Arde was very badly targeted in public. He accused the British media and a section of right-wing commentators of waging a racist campaign against Arde. What is DEI and what is the controversy about it? DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) means providing equal opportunities and increasing participation of people from different communities, ethnicities and under-represented institutions. DEI policies at universities aim to increase the participation of people who have chronically under-participated in education and jobs. Its critics say that this sometimes runs the risk of giving more importance to a person’s identity than to his qualifications. Supporters argue that such steps are necessary to provide equal opportunities. Family said – The campaign of misinformation troubled them a lot. Arde’s family expressed deep grief over his death. The family said that the misinformation being spread about Jason had a very bad effect on them. According to the family, Arde was a calm person and always tried to see the good in others. The family appealed to the media to leave them alone. He also appealed for an end to the long-running harassment against Jason and his family. The head of Cambridge University, Deborah Prentice, expressed sadness at Arde’s death. He said his thoughts are with Arde’s family and friends at this difficult time. Britain’s Education Minister Lucy Powell also expressed condolences on his death.
