Before the elections to be held in Israel on October 27, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems to be facing a big challenge from former army chief Gadi Eizenkot. In the new survey of Zaman Israel which came out on Thursday, Eizenkot’s opposition party Yashar is estimated to get 25 seats. Whereas Netanyahu’s Likud party may be reduced to 21 seats.
That means Yashar has taken a lead of 4 seats over Likud. Yashar has also been ahead in most of the surveys in the last few weeks, but the difference was very less. In many surveys, Likud was tied or just 1-2 seats behind. In the new survey this difference has increased to 4 seats.
61 seats are required for majority in the 120-seat Parliament.
Despite Yashwar becoming the largest party, it will not be easy to form the government after the elections. There are a total of 120 seats in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, and at least 61 seats are required for a majority.
In the survey, ‘Change Bloc’ of anti-Netanyahu parties is expected to get 58 seats. That means this alliance seems to be just 3 seats away from majority.
On the other hand, Netanyahu’s supporting parties are expected to get a total of 50 seats. Arab parties may get 12 seats. Of these, Ram Party and Hadash-Tal are expected to get 6-6 seats.
This means that before the elections no major camp has a clear majority to form the government.
Eysenkot said – the leader of the largest party should get a chance
Amidst Eysenkot’s advance, Beychad, the party of anti-Netanyahu leader Yair Lapid, has said that it will not put obstacles in the way of forming the opposition government. But when Lapid was asked whether his party would support Eysenkot becoming prime minister, he did not give a direct answer.
Lapid is the second-ranked leader in Beychad. The leadership of the party is in the hands of former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. He himself has been coming forward as a contender for the post of Prime Minister. Eysenkot had earlier said that the next prime minister should be the person who is the leader of the largest party in the anti-Netanyahu coalition.
His statement also points towards the tenure of Naftali Bennett, who was Prime Minister from 2021 to 2022. At that time Bennett’s party had only 7 seats in the Knesset. Despite this, he became Prime Minister through a coalition. For this reason, there was a lot of debate at that time about his becoming Prime Minister.

Report- Iran can harm Israeli leaders
According to a report by Channel 12, there are indications of efforts by Iran to harm Israeli leaders. PM Netanyahu has government security but Eizenkot does not currently have the formal right to government security.
For this reason, concern has increased regarding the security of Eizenkot. Even amid his growing political power, concerns have emerged about his security. As the election campaign intensifies, Israel’s internal security agency ‘Shin Bet’ is considering providing them armed security.
